Abstract

This paper demonstrates the styles and techniques used within jazz-fusion drumming. It highlights key concepts and architecture of jazz drumming in the modern day and historical aspects. It demonstrates the evolution of how contrasting genres have been implemented into jazz through examining and interpreting various works from artists throughout the century. Jazz-fusion artists such as Larnell Lewis, Roni Kaspi, Nate Smith, Nate Wood, Dennis Chambers, Jason Thomas, and Benny Greb are examined via the use of recordings, writings, and written transcription to further exemplify jazz-fusion drumming. Styles and techniques used within the genre are analyzed in order to show the unique elements found within jazz-fusion. Analyzing equipment such as drum kit assembly, cymbal positioning and use, as well as tunings across the snare, bass drum, and toms, aids in the demonstration of jazz-fusion styles in drumming. Material involving the progression and stylistic nature of traditional jazz standards that have been revamped into more progressive fusion styles is covered in order to further demonstrate the form that jazz-fusion offers in the modern landscape. This paper shows the progression of drumming within the style of jazz-fusion drumming, the history it represents, and progressions of the style.
